Understanding of Troy Maxson’s main character in the play Fences

After reading the first short paragraph, “Objective”, explain briefly what the purpose is
for the final paper on Fences.
According to the first short paragraph, the primary purpose of this paper is to analyze and
get a better understanding of Troy Maxson’s main character in the play Fences. His life alongside
his family gives a general description of life in the 1950s. The paper will also focus on analyzing
the different illusions he had on the various things that could or should have happened to replace
the things currently happening in his life. For instance, Troy’s interest in baseball was shattered
when he was dropped from the team because he was black. This particular event harmed Troy,
his choices, his view of life, and how he treats his family members.
Who is your audience and how does this affect your writing/choice of diction?
In this scenario, my primary audiences are my classmates and any other learner who
shares some interest in the play, Fences. Since my classmates are my primary audience, it is
imperative to use language that is easy for them to learn and understand. The use of simple
English is crucial because the English language is not the first language for all audience
members.

own words? Can students come up with their own topic/thesis rather than choosing from
the list? If so, do they need instructor approval?
There is a list of topics offered for the paper. However, students are free to choose their
topics of interest. Students who decide to choose their topics will require approval on the subject
from their instructor before they begin writing on the issue. Concerning the thesis statement,
students are supposed to develop a strong thesis statement and write it in their own words.
What should your thesis statement accomplish? How long can the thesis be? Should you
use first person or the “announcement” tone?
A thesis statement should clearly outline the primary argument of the entire essay. The
thesis statement chosen should achieve three main tasks: introducing the topic at hand,
presenting an overview of what the audience should expect, and finally, present the argument. A
good thesis should be written in an announcement tone. The use of first-person can make it
vague. The thesis statement should primarily be one to three sentences.
