Once you’ve studied Chapter 2: Ethics Matters- Understanding the Ethics of Public Speaking, sections:
2.1 The Ethics Pyramid
2.2 Ethics in Public Speaking
2.3 Free Speech
you’ll be ready to begin your first Reflective Writing Assignment. Formulate your thoughts into two organized and supported responses using the following prompts:
How would you compare and contrast what you’ve learned about the ethics of public speaking with what you’ve discovered about “free speech.” In other words, you’ll want to explore what these two have in common as well as what makes them unique. Then ask yourself, do we really need to be concerned about “Free Speech in America”. I mean it’s guaranteed by the Constitution, right? That should be “case-closed”. But is it? What do you think? Delve into the reading and explore your reaction. (minimum 10-12 sentences)
What is the purpose of the National Communication Association Code of Ethics? Why do you think these guidelines were created? How do you intend to reflect them as you continue with your speaking assignments in this class and beyond? In your perspective is there anything missing from this Code? If so what would you add? Why? (minimum 10-12 sentences)
This is your opportunity to think in detail about these topics. Use the prompts to guide you, but feel free to include issues, items, and ideas that jump into your head surrounding these questions.
